Tap Changer Contacts & Assemblies

Deringer-Ney produces precision-engineered tap changer contacts and assemblies for extremely demanding transformer applications. Designed to withstand harsh arcing conditions, they are found worldwide in commercial power distribution systems, providing consistent and reliable voltage regulation.

Tap Changer Components

Tap Changer Contact Capabilities

Our tap changer contacts are manufactured through a specialty process that creates a highly homogeneous and dense part. The result is better performance and longer life when switching underpowered conditions. They are typically rated for medium voltage operation (1kV-35kV). Specific capabilities include:

  • Design Optimization – we can also optimize component geometry to meet specific operating and performance demands
  • Multiple Joining Processes – such as soldering, welding, and brazing for secure contact bonding
  • Custom Backing Solutions – we can combine contacts with machined or stamped backings
  • Complete component assemblies – We also offer complete assembly services which include custom backing integration, spring member integration, and various joining processes. These services allow us to deliver ready-to-install assemblies to our customers.

Applications

Tap changers (on-load voltage regulators or on-load tap changers) enable power suppliers to maintain constant voltage supply, despite changes in customer demand. Our switching contacts ensure smooth device operation by allowing power to flow optimally through the circuit. Deringer-Ney’s tap changer customers typically include transformer manufacturers and voltage regulator manufacturers, in addition to service providers and power utilities who use them for tap changer repair.

Materials

Powder metal tap changer contacts are comprised of silver, copper, tungsten, and/or carbide powder that is brazed to solid copper backings. Each metal contributes certain properties as follows:

Silver powder – Superior conductivity and arc resistance
Copper powder – Fair electrical and thermal conductivity
Tungsten powder – Arc resistance and high melting point
Carbide powder – Wear resistance and extended life

Contacts are precision-bonded to solid copper backings to create a homogeneous and dense structure with a high level of performance and extended service life under severe arcing conditions.

Why Choose Us for Your Tap Changer Contacts and Assemblies?

Our tap changer components are designed and manufactured to meet the specific mechanical demands and operating conditions of virtually any tap changer system. We are backed by over a century of experience. Coupling this with our advanced powder metal technology means that our tap changer contacts will deliver the performance and reliability that power distribution systems demand.
