Component Materials

Materials used in our slip ring components are carefully selected to match the requirements of the intended application, including operating environment. DNI specializes in low-voltage/current applications, where precious metals are often used for superior conductivity and resistance to corrosion. Key materials include:

Precious Metal Alloys – Paliney 7, Paliney 25, Paliney 2000, Neyoro G, and Ney 75 from DNI are commonly used to make slip rings and brushes. These materials provide excellent conductivity, low contact resistance, corrosion resistance, and exceptional wear performance.

Bimetallic Solutions – for more economical and less demanding solutions, brushes can utilize a non-precious base material as the spring member with precious metal only in the contact area, reducing the cost of the component.

Plated Rings – Base-metal (for example, copper alloy) rings are usually plated with silver or gold to enhance conductivity, durability, and corrosion resistance.

DNI’s Unique Capabilities

DNI has the capabilities to customize slip ring system components to meet the unique needs of our customers. These advantages include:

Noble Metal Alloys Experience – for over a century, we have developed, manufactured, and supplied specialty materials featuring excellent conductivity, low electrical noise, and corrosion resistance.

Application-Specific Design – we work closely with our customers to design application-specific components, including selecting materials and advising on part features and geometries.

Precision In-House Manufacturing Capabilities – our in-house molding, stamping, machining, CNC wire forming, and finishing capabilities assures tight tolerances and consistent performance for your slip ring system components.

Slip Ring Brushes

Slip Ring Brushes

Slip ring brushes and brush assemblies are designed for consistent conductivity, minimized electrical noise, and long performance life. Materials are selected to address both performance and environment challenges.

DNI manufactures two primary types of brushes:

Wire Formed Brushes

These brushes are made from fine wire or thin ribbon. Because these brushes are made on CNC wire formers, they are ideal for applications requiring complex shapes and tight tolerances.

Wire Bundle Brushes

We manufacture wire bundle brushes with wire counts varying from dozens to thousands of strands. Wire bundle brushes can be made using any of our noble metal wire alloys.

Brush Assemblies

Brush block assemblies consist of the brushes mounted in a brush holder. Brush assemblies allow for easy installation and consistent, reliable electrical contact. They are designed to establish and maintain optimal contact between the brushes and slip rings. These components are critical for maintaining alignment and stability, which directly impacts the performance and lifespan of the slip ring system. DNI’s brush assemblies are engineered to accommodate various brush types and sizes, and can be designed for both flat (pancake) and cylindrical system configurations.

Slip Rings

Slip Rings

DNI can guide customers through all aspects of the slip ring design process. Application requirements that must be considered include ambient conditions, electrical performance requirements, shelf life, and cost.

The advantages of full precious metal alloy slip rings are low oxidation rates, long shelf life, and low electrical noise. Generally, slip rings made from solid precious metal alloys achieve the best overall performance. Where cost is the primary consideration, the slip ring can be made from a base metal, such as copper alloy or stainless steel, and over-plated with a corrosion-resistant conductive material such as hard gold.

Slip Ring Assemblies

Where required, DNI can help customers design slip ring assemblies that include multiple rings, mounting shaft, separators, and other features that provide multi-channel capabilities.

Solder Pins

Solder pins are used to connect brushes to external circuits, ensuring a secure and conductive joint. These pins are designed for easy soldering and are available in various materials, lengths and diameters. DNI’s solder pins are manufactured to tight specifications and tolerances, providing reliable electrical connections and long-term performance.
